How to Comment

Hello friends,

I've heard from some of you that you're having difficulty commenting on this blog. I've changed the settings so anyone can post, but all posts go to my email to review before publishing. Even so, there are still some difficulties, so I thought I'd give a quick tutorial on how to do it.

First, open up the blog post you want to comment on. Scroll down to the bottom where you'll find a orange "B" and the words "Enter your comment..." Click on "Enter your comment..." and it will transform into a type box where you can start to leave your message. However, you should also be able to select your identity/mode of commenting. The default should be your name on your google account (be sure that you're logged in!). This is your name on your email or any other google account. I'm honestly not sure what will show up if you don't have a gmail address--perhaps make sure you're logged into whatever email platform you use. Of course you can select another method of identity (such as AIM or a blog of your own through a different server), but I'd recommend using the default.

After your identity is selected & your message written, you can select "Notify Me" if you want to receive an email notifying you of replies to your comment. This is advisable if you want to ask me a question about the blog/my lifestyle, but it's completely up to you.

Now please select "Publish" in the lower right corner of the type box. The first time you do this, the website will take you to another page where it asks you if you want your name on the comment to match your gmail identity (usually 1st & last name) as well as be linked to your official google account OR if you want to use a pseudonym. If you're fine with your google account name/info being used, click continue. Your comment is now sent to my email for review before publishing :)

However, to make a pseudonym--one that will always be used when you comment on my blog (and probably on other public blogs & forums, etc.) there is a link right below your ID that says "use a pseudonym" or "create a pseudonym" or something to that nature. Click on it and it will have you fill in what you want for your pseudonym. Beware, I'm not sure how to change this once you've filled it in, so you might want a pseudonym that you're okay using in many different formats--maybe just your first name, or your initials, or your first name & last initial, etc. After creating a pseudonym, click continue. Congratulations, your comment has been sent to my email for review prior to public publishing.

I'd really appreciate it if you'd take a moment and try commenting on this post to make sure these instructions work. Perhaps if anyone else has more experience commenting on blogs or forums could leave some advice for us newer folks. Thanks so much! Take care.

Laundry Detergent

Hello Friends! I hope you are all well. Recently I ran out of my homemade laundry soap. Since I needed to make a new batch, I thought I'd bring you along and show you my recipe. It's super simple. I got the recipe from Making It: Radical Home Ec for a Post-Consumer World  by Kelly Coyne & Erik Knutzen. Homemade Laundry Detergent 1 part grated soap bar 2 parts borax 2 parts baking soda/washing soda Mix together in a bowl, then pour into an air-tight container for storage. Use about 2 Tbsp of powder for each load of laundry, or what suits your needs. How simple can you get? And all of those ingredients can be found without plastic packaging--at least here in the US. I've been using this recipe for over 2 years. It works just as well as the liquid soap you can buy in plastic jugs. Homemade Deodorant

So let's talk deodorant alternatives. You can use a salt block. You can use baking soda. You can even use a potato! Well, that's according to Niahm, a BSc in Nursing Science, and host of the Fairyland Cottage youtube channel. You can check out that particular video  here . I can't honestly say I've tried the potato option. And I couldn't find a salt block that came without plastic packaging. But I did try using baking soda and found that it irritated my skin. So I scoured the internet and found a recipe on a blog called MamaInstincts.com  and lo-and-behold I already had all but one ingredient. I'm sure you recognize baking soda and coconut oil, but I'll explain the others. In the top right ramekin I have arrowroot powder--this is the one ingredient I still needed to buy.
